Microsoft has announced new Azure data and cloud services, new AI and Azure services, and new data, IoT edge and AI services on the annual conference for developers.

Thousands of developers gathered in Seattle for Microsoft’s annual conference Build 2017. Opening the event, Satya Nadella, CEO at Microsoft, explained that Windows, Microsoft Office, and Microsoft Azure can together offer more than a billion opportunities for developers to connect their innovations with Microsoft customers.

The list of Microsoft announcements includes new Azure data and cloud services, new AI and Azure services, and new data, IoT edge and AI services.

“In a world of near infinite compute power and an exponential growth in data, we are focused on empowering every developer to build applications for this new era of intelligent cloud and intelligent edge,” said Nadella.

With the world full of information, it is this information that contains loads of opportunities. Microsoft has announced the following innovations to help people realize these opportunities:

  • A preview of Azure IoT Edge, technology that extends the intelligence — and other benefits — of cloud computing to edge devices.
  • Extensions to the Microsoft Graph to combine insights from the world of work with device insights and contextual awareness of the physical world.
  • Technology that is capable of searching the real world just the same way you search the digital world, which will secure your data and make you more productive at the same time.

Microsoft demonstrated how developers become more high-end and successful with a help of new Microsoft Azure and Visual Studio services and tools:

  • Azure Cosmos DB has been developed from scratch to power planet-scale cloud services and data-intensive applications and provides impeccable performance, fault tolerance and support for every type of data, including graph. This globally distributed, multimodel database service is the first in the industry to deliver horizontal scale with guaranteed uptime, throughput, consistency and single-digit millisecond latency at the 99th percentile.
  • New MySQL- and PostgreSQL-managed services that join Azure SQL Database to ensure expanded choice and flexibility on a service platform.
  • An early preview of new database migration services developed by Microsoft to enable Oracle and SQL Server customers to more easily move their data and quickly modernize apps.
  • A number of Azure SQL Database improvements, which includes new Managed Instance private preview to provide SQL Server instance-level compatibility and facilitation of existing SQL Server apps migration to Azure SQL Database, and general availability of Threat Detection and preview of Graph support.
  • Developers will be able to work seamlessly across Windows and Mac environments with full support for mobile, web and cloud workloads due to general availability of Visual Studio 2017 for Mac.
  • Support for containers of nearly every type, on every platform, with the general availability of Windows Server Containers support in Azure Service Fabric, with Visual Studio tooling, and a preview of the ability to use Docker Compose support for Service Fabric.
  • A rapidly growing customer base of 300,000 companies and more than 200 million users across 188 countries is supported by DocuSign, a provider of electronic signature technology and Digital Transaction Management services for facilitation of electronic exchanges of contracts and signed documents. The company unveiled that it prefers Microsoft Azure for global expansion, starting in Canada. DocuSign uses Azure SQL Database to process enormous volumes of digital transactions.

Microsoft is going to better connect developers with Office 365 customers around the globe taking into consideration that Office 365 has more than 100 million monthly commercial active users:

  • Any developer is now allowed to publish for Microsoft Teams, the new chat-based workspace in Office 365.
  • New Microsoft Graph APIs, including APIs from SharePoint and Planner, are available for developers. Via the Microsoft Graph developers get access to Office 365 data and intelligence.
  • Developers and ISVs who host their production SaaS applications on Microsoft Azure and sign up through the Azure website can now have their apps’ data and workflow automatically extended to authorized Office 365 customers through standard connectors for PowerApps and Microsoft Flow.

Microsoft underlined the importance of artificial intelligence and unveiled its plans to amplify human ingenuity with intelligent technology bringing AI to every developer.

  • The company presented new services for the industry’s broadest offering of cognitive services and 29 services for developers, with unique customization options. New services include Bing Custom Search, Custom Vision Service, Custom Decision Service and Video Indexer, new PowerPoint add-in called Presentation Translator. Microsoft announced the launch of new Cognitive Services Labs allowing developers to experiment with new services, such as a Gesture API.
  • Developers can write cards once that look great across multiple apps and platforms with a help of new adaptive cards supported by the Microsoft Bot Framework.
  • Azure Batch AI Training enables developers and data scientists to configure an environment with parameters and run their models against multiple CPUs, multiple GPUs and eventually field-programmable gate arrays.
  • Microsoft partnered with HP to work on devices and Intel on reference platforms to deliver Cortana-enabled devices.
  • Microsoft demonstrated how Microsoft products and services including Dynamics 365, Office 365, Microsoft Teams, Cortana Skills, Microsoft Graph and Sentiment Analysis, will be integrated into Tact, the sales experience platform, later this year.
