Prince was an outstanding figure in American music with his recognizable and incomparable style – the mix of jazz, funk, R&B, disco and rock. He has sold over 100 million records worldwide, being one of the best-selling artists of all time. He has won seven Grammy Awards, an Oscar, a Golden Globe Award, and an Academy Award. Rolling Stone magazine ranked Prince at number 27 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

President Barack Obama called Prince “one of the most gifted and prolific musicians of our time,” and said there are not many people who had influenced “the sound and trajectory of popular music more distinctly.”

The New York Times described Prince as “a master architect of funk, rock, R&B and pop,” and underlined his ability to ignore genre categories.

Critic Simon Reynolds called him a “pop polymath, flitting between funkadelia, acid rock, deep soul, schmaltz – often within the same song. Prince doesn’t so much build bridges between categories as create music that exceeds each category simultaneously.”

People paid tribute to the great artist in social networks.

Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger wrote about Prince on his Twitter page.

Prince hadn’t felt well lately. He postponed two performances from his Piano & A Microphone Tour on April 7, 2016, stating that he was “battling the flu”. Later he performed at Atlanta concert although he still didn’t recover.

On his way back to Minneapolis, his private jet had to make an emergency landing, so that he could seek medical treatment. It was reported he suffered from “bad dehydration” and had been fighting influenza for several weeks. Allegedly he left the hospital contrary to doctors’ recommendation. On April 19, just the day before his death, he attended a performance by singer Lizz Wright at the Dakota Jazz Club.

Fans all over the world have been remembering the life of Prince with purple-coloured tributes and dance parties. Multiple buildings, newspaper front pages and websites have changed color in his memory.
