Tesla Unveils $35,000-Model 3, Pre-orders Break 134,000 in 24 Hours

The Model 3 considerably differs from previous versions in price and will become one of the safest cars in the world.

The first announcement of the next generation of Teslas took place in the middle of 2014 and now, in a year and a half, the company has finally presented the Model 3 at the company’s design studio in Hawthorne, California.

According to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, the car will deliver at least 215 miles of range beginning at just $35,000 — that’s a bold claim, and an important one for Tesla to meet. Musk expressed absolute confidence that it is impossible to buy a better car for $35,000, even with no options. The Model 3 will be one of the safest cars in the world.

The Model 3 differs from Models S and X by a 15-inch landscape touchscreen (previous models have the 17-inch portrait touchscreen). However, it also comes in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions. It has standard autopilot hardware and all automated safety features. The Model 3 is comfortable for five adults — “comfort is the important part here,” says Musk. You can even fit a 7-foot long surfboard on the inside.

The new model supports Tesla’s high-speed Supercharging network. Tesla is planning to double the number of Superchargers up to 7,200 by the Model 3 launch at the end of 2017.

The front to rear roof area — from the windshield all the way to the trunk — will be one continuous piece of glass. Tesla remained front and rear trunks for storage from the Model S. “More cargo capacity than any gasoline car of the same external dimensions,” says Musk.

The Model 3 will be available for purchase at the end of 2017. Tesla has already taken 130,000 preorders for a $1,000 down payment. Tesla is going to more than double the size of its dealership and service network by the end of next year, to sell and take care of all these new cars.

Ten years ago Elon Musk presented the Tesla Motors master plan:

  • Build sports car – The Tesla Roadster
  • Use that money to build an affordable car – The Model S
  • Use that money to build an even more affordable car – The Model 3

While announcing the Model 3, Musk thanked Model S and Model X purchasers for funding the development of the car. Tesla team has been working on the Model 3 for ten years and the evening of presentation has become the culmination of decade’s efforts.

By the way, the previous Model X was announced only several months ago. Both Model S and Model X are very expensive – their cost reaches $100,000. Thus cheaper automobile, like the Model 3, is fairly considered to be the future of the company.
