A brand new trailer for the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens has arrived: the trailer has recently been shown at the Anaheim Convention Centre, California, US and had been simultaneously broadcast on the Internet. The film is currently set for a December 18 release date in the US.

The director and co-writer of The Force Awakens JJ Abrams said that Star Wars is about hope: it’s a saga that sees fighters rebelling against tyranny, Lords of the Sith finding redemption, and young farm boys looking up at the sky and dreaming of something more impressive.

*The first shot takes us to a desert planet cluttered with the ruins of some familiar-looking ships. The crowned wedge of the Star Destroyer in the background dominates the frame to such an extent that it is easy to miss the remains of the X-wing nearer the foreground.

During the hour-long opening panel in Anaheim, JJ Abrams revealed that the planet is called Jakku, even though, previously, most funs had assumed that this planet is Tatooine.

The place is a new location in the Star Wars universe where Rey lives. Daisy Ridley, who was also present at the Star Wars Celebration, describes the location as a “ship’s graveyard”, and says that her character is a “self-sufficient” scavenger.

The interesting fact of the next shot, that shows the remains of Darth Vader, is that the narrator is Luke Skywalker himself. The famous mask is, of course, fire damaged from the funeral at the conclusion of The Return Of The Jedi.

“The force is strong in my family,” says Skywalker. “My father has it. I have it. My sister has it. You have that power too.”

There is another thing worth noting here: “My father has it.” Why does Luke use the present tense? Does he mean that Vader – or Anakin Skywalker – is still alive in the sense that he is a Force ghost?

Then appears Oscar Isaac, who plays the X-wing pilot Poe Dameron. The Celebration panel makes it clear that he will play a major part in Episode VII. While Isaac was not specific, he described Dameron as, “The best frickin pilot in the galaxy, sent on a mission by a certain princess.”

The trailer gives us our first frontal look at the villain Kylo Ren and his cross-shaped Lightsaber. They say that an early scene in Episode VII will see the Empire’s forces burn a civilian town, and this could well be a glimpse of that scene.

Then goes the shot that shows Finn, in his Stormtrooper outfit, about to take his helmet off. There is a blood all over the mask, clearly indicating a struggle. This must be the flashpoint for Finn’s switch of allegiance, but what happened?

Afterwards the moment of Finn and Rey meeting for the first time on the ship graveyard planet appears.

The final shot lets us look at two veteran characters from the original trilogy: Han Solo looks older and Chewie looks a little shiny.
