’50 Shades of Grey’ Trailer Causes Outrage in America [Video]

’50 Shades of Gray’ first trailer has just hit the web.

Universal has released the full-length theatrical trailer for highly expected movie “Fifty Shades of Grey” courtesy of NBC’s “The Today Show”.

The last ten seconds of the new video may appear not quite safe for work, but the trailer earned the green-band (for general audiences) approval.

There was actually a sanitized for network television version that was launched today on “The Today Show” which was followed by an interview with the cast and a clip from the movie.

The first trailer was preceded several days ago by what amounted to a teaser to the trailer presented by BeyoncĂ© Knowles’s Instagram account.

The star of “Austin Powers: Goldmember” and “The Pink Panther” will be singing a version of “Crazy in Love” for the film adaptation of the extra popular E.L. James novel, some of which is sampled in the above trailer.

“It was certainly a different way to drop a yet another teaser for a trailer,” writes Scott Mendelson of Forbes.  “But them’s the breaks as the technology changes how marketing materials like this are dispersed. In this day and age, how a trailer is released is arguably as much of a news story as the existence of said trailer and what it contains about the film it is advertising.”

Moral watchdogs in the US have already triggered a furious attack on the released trailer for much-hyped erotic romance, claiming that the adaptation encourages sexual violence.

Thus, Morality in Media admitted that the movie cultivated a rape culture which was now permeating US society.

“With the popularity of this book, mainstream opinion-makers (like Oprah, the Today Show and Broadway) are telling the public (especially youth) that humiliation, degradation and torture in sex is normal and to just give it a try,” said the Washington-based group.

The anti-pornography organisation named the film’s central figure, Jamie Dornan’s Christian Grey, a “stalker and batterer”. It said in a statement: “Is this really the kind of relationship we want our daughters, relatives and friends willingly entering into? Do we really want our sons to become Christian Greys, practicing a violent masculinity that degrades men as well?”

The separate Parents Television Council launched a whole attack at US network NBC for showing the trailer during its Today morning show and demanded for the movie to receive an NC-17 rating (equivalent to an 18) from US censors.

“Here’s a book and a movie that are really normalising and even romanticising BDSM relationships, and I think that that’s very troubling, especially the way that this romance is presented in the trailer,” spokesperson Melissa Henson told reporters.

“It’s all made to seem very romantic to a teenage girl who’s watching that trailer. That’s definitely going to be appealing and probably going to pique her interest and be something that she wants to see – and for parents that don’t know what the book is about or what the movie is about, they may easily consent to letting their teenage daughter see this film.”

“Fifty Shades of Grey” stars Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele, the young virgin who becomes Grey’s willing sex slave. Fifty Shades of Grey is expected to hit cinemas on 13 February 2015.
