Indio Downey, the son of well-know Hollywood actor Robert Downey Jr., was taken into custody in West Hollywood Sunday, in connection with possession of cocaine.
According to sources familiar with the matter, police detained the 20-year-old son of the celebrity after they saw he was smoking a pipe when driving a car, eventually finding the contraband while inspecting his vehicle.
“Saturday afternoon around 2 pm, [Indio Downey] was a passenger in a car,” an official with the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Department said. “It was stopped by a sheriff’s deputy because it appeared he was using narcotics paraphernalia to ingest. He was stopped, investigated and found to be in possession of that paraphernalia and a controlled substance believed to be cocaine.”
Meanwhile, Robert said to reporters: “There is a lot of family support and understanding, and we’re all determined to rally behind him and help him become the man he’s capable of being. We’re grateful to the Sheriff’s department for their intervention, and believe Indio can be another recovery success story instead of a cautionary tale.”
Last year the troublesome teen sought help for an addiction to pain pills, undergoing “holistic, natural and orthomolecular” therapy to rid himself of the addiction in rehab, his mother Deborah Falconer said.
“He was not addicted. He was taking one pill a day,” she said at the time. “We are hoping to do it the homeopathic way rather than with medications. He’s being treated with vitamin supplements and organic foods.”
The “Iron Man” star married Falconer in 1992, but the wife four years later and took their baby with her after he was arrested for drug possession, DUI and possession of a concealed weapon.
More arrests and rehab stints followed for Downey Jr. before he finally got into state prison where he spent a year — was arrested twice more, but sobered up for good in 2001 and has since remarried and had son Exton in 2012 with wife Susan Levin.
“This is a nightmare for Robert because his boy has never been in trouble before,” a source told reporters last year after Indio got into trouble. “He’s praying for Indio’s recovery.”
In fact, the source added, “Bob’s friends often encourage him to publicly talk about all of the work he does to help others in recovery, and he always shuts it down. He doesn’t do it for the publicity, but genuinely because he wants to help others. The addiction to drugs almost killed him, and he recognizes that, and wants to prevent that from happening to someone else.”
Indio’s arrest comes a few days after his father was named by Forbes “The Most Powerful Actor”.
“Marvel has been accused of being stingy when it comes to paying the stars of its blockbuster superhero movies. But the studio (owned by Disney) is plenty generous when it comes to Downey,” the publication says. ““As Iron Man, he’s been the driving force behind four of Marvel’s biggest hits, including “The Avengers” which is the third highest-grossing movie of all time.”
“He played hard to get with the upcoming ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ and was rewarded with a big pay hike. Most of Downey’s money this year comes from the backend of ‘Iron Man 3’; which was the highest-grossing movie of 2013 with $1.2 billion in box office revenue.”
