Chelsea Clinton, 34, announced at an event for her mother, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, in New York that she’s pregnant with her first child.
“I just hope that I will be as good a mom to my child and hopefully children as my mom was to me,” Chelsea said, while her husband Marc Mezvinsky stood in the back of the room.
“Marc and I are very excited that we have our first child arriving later this year and I certainly feel all the better, whether it’s a girl or a boy, that she or he will grow up in a world full of so many strong female leaders.”
Hillary immediately reacted that she’s “really excited” for her first grandchild.
“My most exciting title yet: Grandmother-To-Be! @billclinton and I are thrilled that Chelsea and Marc are expecting their first child!” she reported in her Twitter account.
Chelsea revealed to the media last fall that she and her husband “were going to make 2014 the year of the baby.” Around February, she started sporting a suspicious baby bump.
The only daughter of the Clinton couple recently hinted that she may follow in her parents’ footsteps and pursue a career in politics.
“If at some point that weren’t the case, and I didn’t support my mayor or my city councilwoman or my congressman or either of my senators — and I’m lucky to live in a state where I have lots of women representing me, you know — maybe then I’d have to ask and answer the question for myself, and come to a different answer,” she told FastCompany in an interview.
Connecting the news to the topic of the day, Hillary said it made the efforts of No Ceilings more pressing.
“It makes this work even more important,” Clinton said. “Even in the course of my life, I’ve seen a lot of progress, but I want to see us keep moving, and certainly for future generations as well, so that maybe our grandchild will not have to be worried about some of the things that young women and young men worry about today. So obviously, we are very excited about what’s happening in our family, but we’re also very excited because of what we’re doing that we hope gives confidence and support to so many of you across our country.”
Last year Bill Clinton told reporters that his wife chooses grandchildren instead of the Oval office.
“If you ask her, I think she’d say grandmother, but I have found it best not to discuss that issue,” Clinton said.
Clinton said he’s “just trying to… live to be a grandfather.”
“The rest of it’s out of my hands,” Clinton said during an interview with “CBS This Morning.”
