In the past I was always looking for a simple way to make ID cards both for memberships and for customer loyalty programs. The software out there seemed too expensive and too complicated for what I was looking for. Then, I discovered ID Card Workshop.
The menus are simple and user friendly. You have five choices on the main menu: create a new project, records manager, card designer, card issuing center, and record seeker. Within each window is what you need–and even anticipates your next step.
For example, under the Card Issuing Center, you can select Project Preview, Enrollment, Records Seeker, and Print Records right from that window. You don’t have to go back to the main menu and drill down to where you need to go. That’s really a nice touch that I like.
Starting a New Project
Select new project and you get started immediately. You can use one of their handy templates, you can start from scratch, or you can import a project from either Access, Excel, or SQL.
My problem is that I like to tweak things, which is why I like ID Card Workshop so much. It allows me to take their template and modify it for my use. So, if the card isn’t exactly what I need it to be, no problem. I just make the changes.
A nifty feature is the ability to do bar codes, magnetic stripes, and even QR Code on the cards. Of course, you’d have to have a printer that handles the magnetic stripes, as well as software that will allow you to scan the codes. You can print out the reports on a regular printer.
The database importing feature is handy and I really like the fact it takes Excel, Access, and SQL. Definitely a time saver when it comes to migrating your database to this software.
You don’t want to have to input the data again. Another thing I like is being able to take the person’s photo right there and add it to the card. That’s very handy especially if you want to be able to identify your members easily.
The Price is Right
A great feature is that it’s shareware for you to try out. When you’re ready to get serious, you can either use their “pay as you go” plan for $14.95 a month, $37.95 for three months, or if you’re planning on using this a lot, you can pay the full price of $159.95 and get unlimited use.
Right now it’s available only for Windows, but it works on XP, 7, 8, 8.1, and Vista. Since most people use PCs that’s usually not a problem.
