For just more than a decade now, Smithsonian Magazine has held its annual photo contest, which has garnered submissions from all over the planet. And now Smithsonian Magazine has once again paid tribute to the hypnotic beauty of photography, as it just announced the finalists of its 11th Annual Photo Contest. The frontrunners of 2014 are runners are absolutely stunning and exceptional.
This year, the editor’s office of the magazine received a whopping 50,000 extraordinary works of raw and spectacular wonders of the physical world from 132 different countries. From abandoned cathedrals to toppling architectural landscapes to portraits of underwater hunters, the scope of visual splendor is almost overwhelming, proving the far reaches of the globe make for the most mesmerizing artistic muses.
Then, Smithsonian Magazine has narrowed the list down to 60 finalists in six categories including: Natural, Travel, People, Americana, Altered, and Mobile. Amateur photographers from 18 and older, expect for those working for the Smithsonian Institution, could participate.
The category of the ‘American Experience’ covers events, objects or activities connecting the American people to their history or their cultural heritage; photographs that tell us what it means to be an American and provide a sense of what it is like to live in this country.
The ‘Natural World’ is dedicated to animals, plants and landscapes; geological or climatological features; and scientific processes and endeavors, while ‘People’ tells stories of individuals from all walks of life. The category of ‘Travel’ features locales, peoples or activities in the United States and abroad that convey a sense of place.
For ‘Altered Images’ participants manipulated for artistic purposes with their works by applying digital and/or traditional special effects. A sixth category is for images taken with a mobile device (phone or tablet). The Smithsonian will award a prize to the best photograph submitted in any category that was taken with a mobile device.
Not only judges, but also readers are able to vote for their favorite photos and help to determine the winners of the competition’s 11th edition. Voting is now open for the public to select the Readers’ Choice winner, and will continue through May 6th. The winners will be announced May 15.
