What do you think? Could extreme lawnmower racing become an official sport? And the answer is: sure, but probably in case when Honda and other manufacturers crank out vehicles like the “Mean Mower”.
This high-speed lawnmower has officially got into the Guinness Book of World Records today after it achieved an incredible speed of 116.57mph (187.6kph).
Daredevil Piers Ward got behind the wheel of the vehicle he took to the IDIADA Proving Ground in Tarragona, Spain, with the task of beating the 2010 record of 86.83mph.
As Express writes, the Top Gear writer ended up smashing the previous mark by reaching 116.57mph in the madcap machine. To give the cutting edge vehicle its rapid performance, the famous auto manufacturer fitted it with a 1,000cc superbike engine what allowed the lawnmover achieve a greater power-to-weight ratio than a Bugatti Veyron and acceleration from 0-60mph in just four seconds.
The record was set in March with Honda confirming the top speed today.
Piers, 33, said: “It felt surprisingly stable. You start accelerating and think, ‘that feels okay’, so you keep accelerating, and it still feels okay, so you keep accelerating, and accelerating and it just tracks straight and true.”
“The biggest problem was wind resistance. It’s a mower and was designed to do 12mph max, so there’s no aero [dynamics] – it just keeps trying to take your head off all the time. Hence why I adopted my patented ‘Donkey Kong’ pose.”
He went on, adding: “Breaking the record felt superb. I grew up watching Roy Castle on Record Breakers, so to have a modern-day Norris McWhirter say ‘Piers Ward you’ve broken a new world record’ felt excellent.”
The speed of the fastest lawnmover was measured through a 100 metre speed trap which was overseen by official timers, Timing Solutions Limited.
According to Guinness World Records regulations, the mower must record the same run, in both directions, within an hour – with the average speed taken of these two runs.
Honda also had to prove to Guinness it could cut grass like a conventional lawnmower. It can mow a lawn at up to 15mph.
Ellie Ostinelli, one of the organisers from Honda, said: “The original brief for Mean Mower was to create the world’s fastest lawnmower – and now it officially is, by some distance.”
“We are all delighted to hold a Guinness World Records title and we’d like to thank everyone who was involved in what has been a challenging yet incredibly exciting project.”
“The Mean Mower is based on a Honda HF2620 Lawn Tractor that’s been modified by British Touring Car Championship squad Team Dynamics,” explains Autoblog.
“It has a newly fabricated chassis from 4130 chromoly steel and packs a 1.0-liter engine from a Honda VTR Firestorm motorcycle with a six-speed sequential gearbox. The engine produces 109 horsepower and 71 pound-feet of torque – enough power to reach 60 mph in around four seconds.”
“The suspension and wheels come from an ATV, and the cutter deck has been remade in fiberglass. The grass bag holds the fuel tank, oil cooler and secondary radiator. The engine no longer actually cuts grass. Instead, the blade is driven by two electric motors,” the publication adds.
