The magazine’s 50th anniversary swimsuit edition cover has very little to do with bathing suits, however, it’s still a milestone too big for just one supermodel.
The cover, which the magazine is calling “the happiest cover in swimsuit history,” features Chrissy Teigen, Lily Aldridge and Nina Agdal scantily clad in just neon bikini bottoms, smiling over their shoulders. The very fitting theme of the 50th anniversary issue is “Past, Present and Future.”
Posing with her arm draped over her companion, Nina, 21, can be seen sporting a pair of ruched bottoms and gazing into the camera as she runs her hand through her beach-blonde hair.
Standing next to her, 28-year-old Lily Aldridge – who is married to Kings Of Leon frontman Caleb Followill – glowed in an orange and pink number, a gold bracelet glittering on her arm, which was resting on Chrissy’s waist. Turning towards her fellow cover girl, Chrissy, 28, showed off her perfectly pert posterior in a pair of strappy pink briefs.
Teigen, who made her debut in 2010 as “Rookie of The Year” is the veteran of the group, with Agdal following two years later and Aldridge making her first appearance this year.
The gorgeous trio was told they had snagged the coveted cover Thursday afternoon. If there was any disappointment at not getting a solo feature on the front, the ladies hid it well, reacting with glee when they were shown the cover by MJ Day, the editor of the swimsuit issue.
“We had been on the island for a few days by that point and had so much fun together. That day we went to a smaller island where the light was beautiful, and took turns in the middle,” Lily said.
“We really, honestly liked each other,” Chrissy said about working together. “Of course you are going to hear that from anybody who does a group shot, but this time it’s true. The connection was natural and the mood was fun.”
Teigen, who has appeared in the swimsuit issue five times before, said she first shared the news with her husband, musician John Legend.
“Nothing is going to compare to this,” she said. “This is pretty epic.”
In a video posted on S.I.’s web site, Teigen was on the verge of tears as she saw the cover. Aldridge hugged Day. And Agdal, video-conferenced in from Palm Springs, was elated.
It is the first time in history three beauties have featured on the cover, and it was unveiled before a rabid audience in Hollywood outside the studio where Jimmy Kimmel Live was being filmed, with the three models due to appear on the show to discuss their big career moment next Monday, says the Daily Mail.
The models join a long list of beautiful women like Christie Brinkley and Tyra Banks, who have had the honor of covering the magazine, and it’s completely well deserved.
The 2014 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue’s anniversary edition will go on sale Feb. 18.
