Representatives for the couple confirmed that the rumors claiming the two decided to divorce are true. The spokespersons said Duff and he husband of three years Comrie agreed upon “amicable separation” without any discernible drama by Hollywood standards.
“They remain best friends and will continue to be in each other’s lives. They are dedicated to loving and parenting their amazing son, and ask for privacy at this time,” the rep added.
A source close to the actress, says, “There was no major incident – no big event between the two of them. They really did drift apart. They have put effort and thought into this decision for a long time. They tried couples therapy, but in the end, they realized at this time, they work better as friends. And they really are great friends.”
Following the announcement about the split, the former Disney star took to Twitter to thank her fans for their support, and revealed she and her soon-to-be-ex couple were together as news of their separation broke.
“Mike and I are sitting here, we are so appreciative for all of your kindness& well wishes,” she wrote. “Not an easy day but we’re getting thru it together.”
The couple plan to bring up together their son Luca Cruz whom they welcomed back in summer of 2012. “They’re still going to go to the park together,” adds the source.
The split was not “a rash decision,” the source went on. “It’s something [Hilary] thought through,” the source explains. “She really does care about him and he really does care about her.”
Hilary, 26, and Mike, 33, wed in Santa Barbara three years ago. The former Disney star spoke effusively about her husband at the time: “I’ve never met anyone who can say a bad word about him,” she said. “He’s generous, caring and sunny. We just laugh our heads off.”
Duff told reporters back in October that her husband has since become a wonderful dad as well.
“He’s an amazing father,” she revealed. “He’s so patient and loving and involved. He’s all the things that I knew that he would be.”
She later told Access Hollywood Live’s Kit Hoover and Billy Bush that she and the father of her baby were planning on having more children together.
“Mike and I are literally so obsessed with Luca. We’re like, ‘He’s perfect — we should just [have] one and [be] done,’” she said. “But I think once your baby starts getting older, you miss that baby phase and you go in for round two. I think maybe [we’ll have another baby] when [Luca] is 2 or 3,” she added.
However, as sources close to the couple insist, though Hillary and Mike did their best to work out their issues in couples therapy, it ultimately became clear that they “work better as friends.”
And it seems to be the right choice as obviously the former spouses managed to remain in good relationships: in fact, they were seen together as recently as New Year’s Eve and even took young Luca to Disneyland not long time ago.
