“We found him tucked together with his two siblings in the back yard of the Santa Cruz SPCA. Big Bird-as he was named at the shelter-was the shyest of them all to meet us, though he bounded instantly into Beau’s lap as soon as he entered their pen. The look on his little furry face was enough to seal the deal for me, we had met our newest family member,” writes about their puppy, now named Theo, blogger and photographer Jessica Shyba.

Last week Jessica took her three kids to the Santa Cruz SPCA, as she was determined to get a puppy. There they found an adorable little friend that was abandoned with his sibling’s just days before Jessica and her family adopted him at just seven weeks old.

This lovable dog is not merely a family member, though: the puppy  has also become the co-star of an irresistible photo series on Shyba’s Instagram account, and appears to be enjoying his new home very much… particularly at naptime.

Jessica Shyba says that the nap time routine started on the third day they had Theo.

Theo was laying on Beau when the toddler was getting rocked for his afternoon nap and Theo passed out as well. Talk about killing two birds with one stone. Since then every day, Theo joins 23-month-old Beau for a nap.

“I think that Theo, having been abandoned by [his] mother early, feels like Beau is like a litter mate to him. He’s only 8 weeks old now, so he’s still very young,” Shyba said.

Once Beau is asleep, she brings the puppy into his room. “He plops right on top of Beau and they sleep for a minimum of 2 hours together,” she told the Huffington Post via e-mail.

One day, Theo waited outside the bedroom for nap time and so began what the mom calls “the most organic and beautiful relationship I have ever witnessed.”

“Each day, Theo meets us at nap time and waits patiently for beau to fall asleep. By that time, he’s also sleepy, so when I hoist him onto our bed, he stumbles over Beau and plops right down on top of him. And there they sleep, entwined, for at least two hours,” she said.

That’s when Jessica snaps and shares some of the most deliciously adorable moments of new best friends Beau and Theo in sweet slumber.

“The most interesting part about their relationship is that while they immediately found comfort in each other, they also fight like siblings — the roughest out of our three kids.”

On her blog, she adds that she hopes to use the project to give back. “Time will tell where this project leads, but I have high hopes of doing a little book and donating proceeds to the Santa Cruz SPCA.”
