Katy Perry won the title of the best female singer of the year at MTV Europe Music Awards on Sunday, eclipsing Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus who were also nominated for the post and collecting her third EMA prize in the process.

With the three extraordinary nominees for the highly anticipated award, best female was considered to be the most closely watched contest at the Viacom-owned music network’s 20th annual European awards ceremony.

After winning the prize, Perry showed an outstanding performance of her song “Unconditionally”, suspended like a sequin-covered glitter ball 9 meters (30 feet) above a gigantic outer-space-themed set, reports Reuters.

Miley Cyrus, whose “Wrecking Ball” video won the main award. The singer appeared on the red carpet in a bold mini dress with the words “Please Stop Violence” wrapped tightly around her hip.

One Direction boy band was titled the best pop performer, with his frontman Harry Styles, known as much for his singing in the band as for his celebrity girlfriends, was awarded best style.

Rapper Eminem won the “Global Icon” that celebrates lifetime achievement. Last year the award went to the late Whitney Houston.

He was also awarded with best hip-hop, a week after winning artist of the year at the inaugural YouTube Music Awards. When receiving the prize the U.S. star thanked for it his fans, label chiefs and colleagues and all “European ladies”.

The list of winners also included Green Day who took the main prize in the rock category, while Beyonce was awarded in the live performance category. However, both performers didn’t attend the ceremony, and the awards weren’t handed out during the event.

Bruno Mars won the best song category for his hit song “Locked Out Of Heaven” in the first award of the night, while teen star Justin Bieber was honoured with the best male win streak going for a fourth straight year.

A video in which Bieber thanks everybody for his award was shown, but the Amsterdam crowd was so loud that it couldn’t be heard in the arena.

Thirty Seconds to Mars leader Jared Leto was obviously glad when receiving his band’s prize for the best alternative. He later urged everybody for a minute of silence for those affected by typhoon Haiyan, which hit the Philippines on Friday, killing an estimated 10,000 people.

The EMAs are the biggest event organized by Viacom’s Viacom International Media Networks unit.

Thus, it can be concluded that the show saw Justin Timberlake and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis leading the nominations with five each, followed by Cyrus, Thicke, Lady Gaga, Bieber (four each).

The last year’s show abig winner Taylor Swift also attended the ceremony as well as Bruno Mars, Green Day, Thirty Seconds to Mars, Daft Punk, Rudimental, Icona Pop, One Direction, Afrojack, Imagine Dragons, Rihanna, Perry, Eminem, Jay Z, Bastille, The Killers, Paramore, Rita Ora, Drake, Avicii, Calvin Harris and Iggy Azalea.
