Lea Michele made her fisrt public appearance at the Teen Choice Awards Sunday night, since the July 13 death of her “Glee” co-star and boyfriend Cory Monteith.
The Glee actress accepted the award for “Choice TV Actress- Comedy.” The actress was flanked by her fellow “Glee” stars, who had just won as an ensemble for Choice TV Comedy.
The show also won “Choice TV Breakout Star” (Blake Jenner), and “Choice Male TV Scene Stealer” (Chord Overstreet). However, this night was not only about awards, as it turned out to be an emotional night for all Glee cast.
Trying to fight back tears, Michele was full of thanks to those who had supported the musical TV show, not only for their award success, but following the death of Monteith, who played Finn Hudson on the show, as well.
Lea, who wore a necklace with Cory‚Äės name on it, got emotional speaking the first words of her acceptance speech, saying through tears, “Thank you guys. I just wanted to be here today to personally thank all of you and tell everyone out here how much all of your love and support as meant to me over these past few weeks.”
‚ÄúHe was very special to me, and also to the world,” she said, choking back the visible tears in her eyes. “And we were very lucky to witness his incredible talent, his handsome smile and his beautiful, beautiful heart.‚ÄĚ
‚ÄúCory reached out and he became a part of all of our hearts,” Michele continued, dedicating her award to him. She told the “greatest fans in the world” that, with each other’s support, they would all get through this. The broadcast then cut to a memorial title card for the late actor.
Glee also won Choice TV Comedy and cast member Amber Reilly said, ‚ÄúAlthough we lost someone that we really love and that you guys love too we are very fortunate to come back to a show where we feel the love of family and Cory was like a brother to us.‚ÄĚ
“Glee” actress Jenna Ushkowitz, 27, gave a nod to the fans, saying, “We know that Cory would want to dedicate this award to you guys.”
Monteith won the 2011 Teen Choice award for choice TV actor in a comedy for his role as Finn Hudson on “Glee.” ¬†Cory, who co-hosted the Teen Choice Awards in 2010, was found dead July 13 in Vancouver, British Columbia. An autopsy revealed the 31-year-old actor died of an overdose of heroin and alcohol.
He and Michele played an on-again, off-again couple in the popular Fox series Glee and dated off-screen for about a year.
The cast and crew of “Glee” gathered Thursday at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles, where the show is filmed, to honor and remember the 31-year-old actor, reports the NY daily News.
‚ÄúToday, Ryan Murphy and Lea Michele gathered the cast, crew and producers of Glee, along with colleagues from the network and studio, to share memories and music in an emotional celebration of the life of Cory Monteith,‚ÄĚ a producer for 20th Century Fox Television said in a statement.
