From Justin Bieber to Robert Pattinson, Keri Russell to Miley Cyrus, James Hetfield to Rihanna, celebs certainly love to blow our minds with their new ‘dos. Sometimes it’s for a role, like Charlize Theron’s, Cynthia Nixon’s and Natalie Portman’s bald looks. Sometimes, like in the case of Emma Watson, it’s a stylish symbol of a new era in their lives.
And recently, Beyoncé, aka Sasha Fierce, shocked fans early Thursday when she posted a series of photos to her Instagram account debuting a short, blond pixie cut.
The cut, a drastic change from the long waves Bey was sporting earlier this week, is reminiscent of Emma Watson’s and even Miley Cyrus’ short crops – but hey, this is Beyonce, so it’s a thousand times more epic. Her dark brown roots still visible, Queen Bey poses in front of a mirror, apparently loving her new look.
Knowles kept her makeover local: Neal Farinah, who has a salon in Brooklyn, wielded the scissors. Rita Hazan, who’s been working with Mrs. Carter for a year, did Beyoncé’s hue; the singer chopped off her hair Tuesday night and colored it Wednesday night.
Initially, says Hazan, “Her hair was long and went down her back. She’d been thinking about it for a while and she wanted to go for it and cut it. It was a moment that she had.”
Hazan describes the new look as “old Hollywood meets modern day. I started with her natural hair color. I left her base color the same and took thin pieces and highlighted them to this Champagne blond hair. It’s soft but strong at the same time.”
Opinions on Instagram and Twitter have wavered from praise-worthy support to fierce backlash. While some fans are proud of their role model, others think the cut was a huge mistake. And, of course, some people just want to put their two cents in and whip out all the puns and punchlines.
Fans, who “liked” the photos each nearly 250,000 times (and counting), posted mixed reactions in the comments, from “don’t be like Miley” to “CUTE!!!!”
With her pixie cut, the singer joins a sisterhood of celebs who’ve cropped their locks with varying success.
Ellen DeGeneres joked about her short blonde cut: “If you had trouble telling me and @Beyonce apart before…” While Katie Couric lamented her failed attempt at the look — and posted a throwback photo: “Love Beyonce’s new do! Wish I could pull that off! I’ve tried…and failed!”
“Harry Potter” lead Emma Watson revealed that seeing the ‘Halo’ beauty’s new hair almost persuaded her to chop off her own locks. Emma Twitted: “Nearly got out my scissors this morning after seeing @Beyonce’s pixie cut. I only just managed to restrain myself. Close call though…”
The 31-year-old entertainer’s new pixie cut comes just two days after she finished the summer leg of her Mrs. Carter Tour with three shows at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, so it seems that Bey was simply ready to let loose and be free.
On July 22, the singer found herself in a hair-raising situation, catching her tresses in a fan on stage in Montreal as she belted out her hit “Halo.”
