On Tuesday, Dancing with the Stars named its season 16 champions.
Country singer and “American Idol” contestant Kellie Pickler, with the help of pro partner Derek Hough, has transformed into a championship dancer, and she has the tacky but terrific Mirrorball Trophy to prove it.
“Oh my god,” exclaimed an ecstatic Pickler, as Bergeron congratulated the country singer and asked if she had visualized her triumph.
“No, not at all. This is amazing. Oh my God,” squealed the country star, 26, as gold confetti rained in the background.
Upon hearing that she had won the show with Derek, Kellie tweeted: “This is amazing. Oh my God!”
Shortly after the results were announced, Kellie, who initially didn’t hear co-host Tom Bergeron name her the “DWTS” winner, spoke with ABC News. “This has been an unbelievable night. I’m kind of lost for words,” the “American Idol” alumna said.
“I’m very proud,” a very poised Zendaya, who was the runner-up, told “DWTS” co-host Brooke Burke Charvet. “I get to leave here with an amazing experience so I’m happy.”
However, with their victory also came the realisation that the show had ended and wanting to thank Derek for their time together on the show, Kellie gushed: “I’m just going to miss spending time with him, he’s so fun – we’ve had so many great memories together.”
Derek also felt the same way adding: “We have, a lot of great memories.”
Jacoby and Karina Smirnoff did a salsa for their instant dance, and they scored 30 out of 30!
Kellie and Derek danced a jive, and they also got a perfect score!
“What a perfect ending to a wonderful journey,” Carrie Ann said. “You’re the bee’s knees,” Len added, before all three judges awarded Kellie and Derek with 10s as well.
Zendaya and Val Chmerkovskiy jived and it’s a hat trick — everyone got 30!
“You dance with such maturity. It’s incredible,” Len told her. Judge Bruno Tonioli called Zendaya “pitch perfect” and “unique” and unsurprisingly, she also received 30 points for her instant dance.
The audience’s pick for the encore dance went to Kellie and Derek, who wowed the judges on Monday night’s finale with their contemporary routine, even moving Carrie Ann to tears, reports the Huff Post.
Kellie and Derek’s win came after they impressed the judges and viewers with their performances week after week, with Carrie Ann Ianba becoming emotional with their freestyler routine on Monday night.
Below them were Alexandra Raisman and partner Mark Ballas, followed by Jacoby Jones and Karina Smirnoff.
The finale was filled with guest performances by Pitbull, Wynonna (showing that this is what she does), PSY with celebs Andy Dick, Sean Lowe and Victor Ortiz part of his backup dancers, and Jessica Sanchez.
As each contestant eliminated during the season performed, the sweetest moment came when it was Dorothy Hamill’s turn.
She danced the Viennese waltz with Henry Byalikov of the DWTS Troupe because pro Tristan MacManus was unable to perform, and halfway through, she was joined by fellow figure skater and previous DWTS champ, Kristi Yamaguchi, dancing with another Troupe member. As they danced perfectly in sync, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house, says MercuryNews.
