Despite the couple looking uber loved up and embracing in some serious PDA at the Coachella festival last year and as they walked through Toronto airport just last month, reports claimed that the Vampire Diaries stars have decided to go their separate ways.
Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev have called it quits after dating for several years, People magazine has confirmed.
The 24-year-old actress and 34-year-old actor currently co-star on the hit CW series The Vampire Diaries as Elena Gilbert and Damon Salvatore, respectively.
The couple, who first took their romance public in 2011, “will continue to work together and remain best friends, which is where the relationship started” the insider says.
Nina, 24, and Ian, 34, have reportedly promised to not let their personal relationship affect their onscreen chemistry and will remain “consummate professionals”.
The couple were last seen taking a late-night trip to a cat hospital together last month, with no sign then that their own relationship may have been hurting.
Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev kept their romance secret during their early days as a couple, despite evidence that they were together.
Despite their 10-year age difference, the dark haired stars began quietly dating in 2010 a year after the hit show started filming.
Nina was also spotted walking the red carpet at the Met Ball Gala on Monday night alone before making an appearance at the event’s afterparty with a female friend.
Last year, Dobrev revealed that she never wanted to date Somerhalder, but she simply couldn’t resist her feelings.
Nina opened up to Seventeen magazine about falling for Somerhalder.
“I didn’t want to be dating one of my costars – my goal on the show was to be professional,” she admitted.
“But sometimes you can’t help who you have a connection with, and you can only fight it for so long – which I did for a really, really long time.”
However there has been no official word from Nina or Ian – their Twitter pages state nothing of a break up – it is believed that the couple have been spending time apart due to their work commitments with Ian revealing to his fans and followers on Twitter that he will be travelling across the world.
Ian went to Twitter today saying: “A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:People change and forget to tell.”
He is usually very vocal on his account. Nina was on Twitter yesterday, but is not saying anything at all about the split with Ian.
Nina’s rep has declined to comment, telling EntertainmentWise: “We don’t comment on our clients’ personal lives”, whilst Ian’s rep followed suit telling the website: “We don’t comment on our clients personal life.”
The Vampire Diaries is currently in its fourth season on the CW. In February, the network renewed the supernatural drama for a fifth season.
Filming will begin later this year; in the meantime, Dobrev, 24, will spend the summer shooting the Fox movie Let’s Be Cops, which also stars New Girl’s Jake Johnson and Happy Endings’ Damon Wayans Jr., writes US magazine.
