One of the hardest experiences that anyone can endure is the loss of a pet. The sometimes prolonged illness leading up to the pet’s passing can be even more gut-wrenching.
Lennox, a boxer breed, was plagued with cancer and debilitating arthritis, and he had survived multiple surgeries, but a recent tumor growth on his left shoulder made it difficult for him to even stand, according to the owner’s roommate.
Lennox’s owner decided that the humane thing to do would be to put Lennox to sleep to end his suffering.
When Lennox the dog’s owner decided to put his cancer-stricken pet out of his misery, he knew he deserved a farewell fit for a king.
The roommate, Reddit user Nikolaoss from Canada, posted an image of the dog – with a large tumor visible on his left shoulder – as he looked over the plate piled high with food feast.
In the photo, which was posted to a Reddit image forum yesterday, Lennox looks over his feast, which included a turkey leg, bacon, sausages and rice. The picture received more than 24,000 “upvotes” on the social news site. There’s even a video of Lennox eating his last meal.
The dog’s owners smile as they watch their beloved pet tuck into his feast.
Lennox goes for the bacon first. After an initial sniff, he dives for the bacon and chews on the turkey leg, before gnawing on cheesy bread and sausages. Finally he sticks his nose into the rice and greens and, after clearing half the plate, decides he prefers the turkey leg.
“This post isn’t meant to be sad in any way. He lived like an absolute boss all his life! And the meal reflects that!” “Nikolaoss” wrote.
The image has been viewed more than 1.3 million times, while the video on YouTube has garnered more than 14,000 hits.
“This is so sad, but at the same time a beautiful moment,’ one YouTube user responded. “I know that Lennox is in a good place now.”
“Looking at this picture brings tears to my eyes,’ one Reddit user added. ‘He is a beautiful dog and I’m so sorry for your loss! As a dog owner I look up to you!”
“I know a lot of people here don’t believe in heaven, but I think we all believe there is somewhere to go. He shall be put to sleep and his suffering will pass. In an instant his energy will burst out of his body with all the love that has been poured on him for years and it will be free,” user “soapage” wrote.
Dogs with cancer have special dietary needs. The web site Pet Education recommends feeding dogs diets high in protein and fat to help combat weight loss due to cancer or cancer treatments, and trying novel foods to encourage appetite.
In an update to the original Lennox post, Nikolaoss writes that Lennox was euthanized and passed peacefully on Jan. 23. He added, “Thanks for all the comments, my roommate appreciates it a lot. This post isn’t meant to be sad. He lived like an absolute boss all his life!”
