TMZ reports that Kate Upton had to strip to her bikini on a recent “super-secret Sports Illustrated cover shoot” in Antartica, where the temperature was -35 °F.
The website learned that the unreal photos featuring the blonde were made during a private 10-day cruise from Argentina to Antarctica for the magazine’s cover shoot. The cruise departed November 29th and returned December 9th.
“The photos were shot both on the cruise – with massive icebergs as a backdrop – as well as on the penguin-filled islands off the coast of the frozen continent,” TMZ writes.
“But don’t worry – we’re told Upton only stripped to a bikini for a few minutes at a time … and was otherwise wrapped in a pimpalicious fur coat.”
Earlier this month the bombshell appeared on the cover of British Vogue for first time. That was Upton’s second international Vogue cover which reinforced the campaign to tout her as the poster girl for “healthy” models.
“It’s very rare for a girl to move from one area of the business to the other, largely due to the fact that fashion models are almost without curves, whereas swimwear girls are celebrated for them,” wrote U.K. Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman in an editor’s note.
When I decided to shoot Kate for our first cover of 2013,” she continued, “it was to kick off the year with a young women who is not a stereotypical fashion model – although, let’s face it, she’s hardly a heffalump!”
Upton, who likely has first-hand experience being put into samples at photo shoots that don’t fit her curves, commented on the issue:
“I’m sure every designer has a certain person in mind who they would ideally like to wear their clothes, but the problem is that a lot of the time that person doesn’t actually exist, unless she is a 15-year-old model.”
She added: “I don’t really have a personal opinion on whether they should change the sizes of samples or not, but I do think it’s a topic that should be looked at, and I do think there won’t be many women buying those clothes, if, size-wise, they don’t seem realistic.”
The model stood up for curvy women after being slammed by a bitchy blogger earlier this year.
“She is beautiful, sexy and all-American,” says Steven Meisel of Upton. “Not only is she hardworking and focused, but she is also very funny, upbeat, and has a really positive attitude. It’s hard to take a bad picture of her.”
Kate Upton is considered to be rather competitive. “I definitely get my competitive instinct from my mom,” she continues.
David Kirsch, her personal trainer, is one of Kates biggest fans. He said: “I have trained a lot of models and celebrities, and let me tell you, she is so determined and willing to do whatever it takes,” adding: “She’s incredibly smart and driven.”
The 20-year-old is quite popular among people all over the world as she sets a good example. Upton makes a point of eating, sleeping, and exercising. “I don’t want to starve myself,” she says. “I still want to hang out with my family and be a normal girl”.
