From hosting “Saturday Night Live,” to headlining the all-male revue of “Magic Mike,” to being anointed People’s Sexiest Man Alive, 2012 has been a banner year for Channing Tatum, and now the actor is adding one more achievement to this long list: dad-to-be.
The 32-year-old and wife Jenna Dewan-Tatum, also 32, are expecting their first child, writes the MTV.
Tatum and Dewan-Tatum reps confirmed the two ”are pleased to announce that they are expecting the birth of their first child next year,” according to US Magazine.
“It was a total surprise,” an insider tells Us of the pregnancy, adding that Tatum, 32, is taking a full year off to be with his expectant spouse and their baby-to-be, due sometime in 2013.
ChaIn one of his interviews last month Tatum opened up about his desire to have a large brood (perhaps knowing something we didn’t). Alabama-bred heartthrob is also a sculptor who quotes Edgar Allan Poe, loves to give his wife massages and can’t wait to start their family.
“I would hope so!” the dancer-turned-actress aid once in January when asked if kids were in the couple’s future. “I just don’t know when. When it’s meant to be, it will happen.”
He contunied: “I’m ready; I think she’s ready. The first number that pops into my head is three, but I just want one to be healthy and then we’ll see where we go after that. It’s really easy for us guys to say, ‘I want like 15 kids.’ Jenna will be like, ‘Well you better get another wife!'”
Tatum has spoken to various outlets about his desire to step behind the camera and try his hand at directing in 2013. If only diaper duty came with a union crew.
The couple, who recently costarred in the film “10 Years,” met on the 2006 dance film “Step Up,” and wed in 2009 on a private Malibu estate overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
Besides a baby, the new year will be a busy year for the parents-to-be. Tatum, who turned heads this year in the movie hits “Magic Mike,” “21 Jump Street” and “The Vow,” has at least four movies in the works. Dewan-Tatum is appearing in this season of “American Horror Story: Asylum” and has a TV movie called “She Made Them Do It” premiering Dec. 29 on Lifetime.
The People reports, currently training to play an Olympic athlete in next year’s Foxcatcher, Tatum is all heart and muscle at 195 pounds. “I like to be lean. If I get too bulky I can’t move well and I like to move,” he says. “When I’m not training, I get really round and soft.”
Which is just fine by his wife. “People know him to be fun and sexy, but they don’t know how emotionally deep and spiritually open he is,” says Dewan-Tatum, 31. “He is such an open-hearted person; what you see is what you get.”
Congrats to the couple and stay tuned to the Ministry for more Hollywood family fare.
