Carine Felizardo, a shapely blonde model from northern Brazil, was late Friday crowned Miss Bumbum 2012 in Sao Paulo, a title rewarding Brazil’s sexiest female derriere.

“I’m very happy with the victory. I was confident because I know I’m in my best shape right now,” said Ms. Felizardo according to The NY Daily News. “I expect much change for the better from now on.”

She added: “Already I’m very happy with everything that happened but I will invest even more in my modelling career. I would like to thank those who voted for me, those who believed in me, my family, my friends.”

A jury of six women and five men picked Carine Felizardo among 15 finalists in the second annual edition of the contest, held in a Sao Paulo hotel, reports Inquirer. Andressa Urach, another 25-year-old model from the southern state of Santa Catarina finished second while 21-year-old Camila Vernaglia from Sao Paulo state was third.

25-year-old  Carine Felizardo, who receives R$5,000 (approximately $2,560) in prize money, has reportedly accepted an invitation to pose nude for the cover of Sexy magazine’s January 2013 issue. Asked what makes a woman sexy, the pageant winner replied: “Women have to love yourself.”

In the Grand Final, Felizardo vied with 14 other contestants to be judged the owner of the country’s best bottom. The contest comprised an elimination round that featured representatives from all of the country’s 26 states and the federal district of Brasilia. The contestants’ preparation for the competition included surfing lessons and jungle training.

The jury, which included Rosana Ferreira – last year’s Miss Bumbum – delivered its verdict after the contestants sashayed down the catwalk first in evening dresses and later in string bikinis that revealed the important part of their anatomy.

“I am very proud of my bumbum,” she said. “(I’m) proud to represent the Brazilian woman,” she added. Carine stressed that she owed her victory to years of hard gym training.

More than 500 competitors enter the contest every year. However, it is not without controversy. A report on Brazilian news website Globo said one of the contestants, Cibelle Ribeiro, a pre-pageant favourite, was disqualified for suspected implants. However, she was allowed to re-enter the contest after X-rays confirmed her innocence.

Graciela Murano, a Brazilian writer, was quoted in the Huffington Post as admitting her country had a “thing with butts” and also that the word “bumbum” was a commonly used term in the South Amercian country. Murano also said that while most people knew of the competition, they pretend they’re not interested.

“Every woman has read about it and won’t admit it,” she said, “and every man’s dream is to be a part of the judging team.”

Pageant organizer Cacau Oliver, a well-known female beauty spotter, said: “I think that the tropical climate, the carnival and all this racial mixing gives the Brazilian woman a unique biotype on the planet.”

He continued: “The Brazilian woman’s derriere is a part of the body that the whole world admires and the contest just reaffirms this.”
