The Pirelli Calendar – is the world’s most prestigious almanac, which unusually presents a gorgeous raunch-fest of the finest looking women on earth being nude; but for 2013 the format was changed when Pirelli eschewed the traditional choice of a specialist fashion photographer to lens the pics, opting instead for acclaimed photojournalist Steve McCurry.
Normally the calendar features models in various stages of undress, but the chosen photographer elected to shoot the 2013 has elected to keep the clothes on.
The calendar, undertaken by the Italian tire company each year, is typically filled with 12 models artfully stripped down to their birthday suits. The 2012 edition by Mario Sorrenti featured full-frontal nudity by the likes of Lara Stone and Kate Moss, as you can see here.
The 2013 calendar, however, lacks the overt sexiness for which previous calendars have become known. Nevertheless the images are no less alluring – with a cast counting some of the world’s most beautiful women, such as Karlie Kloss, Liya Kebede and Petra Nemcova, that would be near impossible.
And these are more than just pretty faces. Each model was selected because of their high-profile involvement with charities, and calendar information highlights the work the organizations do.
The Herald Sun reports, Steve McCurry is well-known as a documentary photojournalist – famed for a 1984 National Geographic cover of a young Afghan woman – and for the Pirelli Calendar commission, he took the models to the streets of Brazil.
For the fist time, Mr McCurry has bucked the risqué themes favoured by predecessors such as fashion guru Karl Lagerfeld, Annie Leibovitz, Richard Avedon, Mario Sorrenti and Terry Richardson, as all 11 of the women featured are clothed.
You can photograph nudes anywhere,” McCurry has said, “But these models are clothed, and each of them has her own charity. They are purposeful and idealistic people.” When it comes to altruism versus Lara Stone getting her kit off, we think Steve’s got his heart in the right place.
“I tried to portray Brazil, its landscape, its economy and its culture, along with the human element,” McCurry says. “This was the story I wanted to tell through my lens. For me photography is an important expressive means to tell large and small stories of daily life.”
Model Summer Rayne Oakes leans against giant bamboo stems in a plunging red dress, and Brazilian actress Sonia Braga reaches from a weathered stone balcony in a sleeved purple one.
Adriana Lima, Victoria’s Secret Angel, has become the first model to pose for the Pirelli Calendar while pregnant, writes The Daily Mail.
The Brazilian-born 31-year-old, who gave birth to her second daughter, Sienna, in September (and walked the Victoria’s Secret catwalk just weeks after). She wears a black cropped top and low-slung skirt in the image, rather more clothing than one might usually see on a model in the Pirelli Calendar. Lima first modeled for the Pirelli calendar in 2005.
The Time says, in the 40 editions published since the first in 1964, the calendar has featured a mix of women, especially big-name models and actresses like Jennifer Lopez, Iman, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss, Heidi Klum, Miranda Kerr, Daryl Hannah, Julia Stiles, Selma Blair, Sienna Miller, Penélope Cruz, Sophia Loren, Julianne Moore and Gisele Bündchen.
Fellow Brazilian (and former Victoria’s Secret angel) Bündchen herself was under the spotlight on pregnancy earlier this month when she was photographed on the beach in a skimpy bikini. The image was a mini sensation – her belly was bulging but the rest of her body was still model-thin. For models, it seems, pregnancy adds a glow but no superfluous poundage.
The 2013 Pirelli Calendar comprises 34 images bound together in a calendar-book that you can enjoy on its website here. It features 11 models, actresses and singers.
