American Music Awards 2012: Justin Bieber Named Artist of the Year [Video]

Justin Bieber was named favorite artist of the year Sunday, beating out Rihanna, Katy Perry, Maroon 5 and Drake for the top prize at the American Music Awards. It was his third award of the night.

America proved its Bieber Fever was strong: The teen singer dominated the American Music Awards on Sunday night.

Justin Bieber emerged as the big winner at the 40th annual American Music Awards Sunday night in Los Angeles after bagging a hat-trick of awards.

A young powerhouse of pop music was recognized as Favorite Pop/Rock Male Artist, Favourite Pop/Rock album for Believe and show’s top award, artist of the year. He beat out such artists as Katy Perry, Maroon 5, Rihanna and Drake. It turned out to be his third award of the night.

The Daily Mail writes, when Bieber won the first award of the night, which was for favorite pop/rock male artist , he accepted with the a rather daring comment: “I want to say this is for all the haters who thought that I was just here for one or two years. I feel like I’m going to be here for a very long time.”

According to the CBSNEWS, the teen idol pulled his mother, Pattie Malette, onstage to help him accept the award.  He said: “This is my mom. She’s little, but she’s beautiful.” He thanked her for believing in him.

The 18-year-old singer also won the honor in 2010. He said it’s “hard growing up with everyone watching me” and thanked people who continued to have faith in him.

Receiving his second award Justin was kissed on the neck by Jenny McCarthy, who presented the award. “Wow. I feel violated right now,” he said, laughing.

Nicki Minaj, who wore three different wigs and four outfits throughout the night, was also a double winner; bagging the awards for favourite rap/hip hop album for Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded and favourite rap/hip hop artist.

She was in an all-white get-up, including fur coat and pink hair when she performed her new song “Freedom.”

But also there was another flamboyant collaboration, that turned out to be the night’s most colorful performance: Korean rapper PSY and MC Hammer.

Hammer joined the buzzed-about pop star for his viral song “Gangnam Style”. PSY rocked traditional ‘Hammer’ pants as they danced to his jam and to Hammer’s “Too Legit to Quit”.

Also the winner of the nights was Taylor Swift, who won her fifth consecutive award for favorite country female artist. She said to her fans and admirers: “This is unreal. I want to thank the fans. You guys are the ones who voted on this”.

A newcomer in show business, Carly Rae Jepsen, 26, who is actually Justin’s protégé, scooped the prestigious New Artist of the Year besting the incredibly popular, One Direction.

The award for best alternative rock artist this year went to Linkin Park.

Usher kicked off the three-hour show with green laser lights beaming onstage as he performed a medley of songs as “Numb”, “Climax” and “Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop”. He won the award for best male soul/R&B artist. Luke Bryan won favorite country male artist and Lady Antebellum favorite country group.

The CBSNEWS says, this year stands out for \ the creation of the new Electronic Dance Music Category. David Guetta beat out nominees Calvin Harris and Skrillex for the prize. “

Non-televised awards went to Katy Perry for pop/rock female artist, Beyonce for soul/R&B female artist, Adele for adult contemporary artist and Shakira for Latin artist.

American Music Awards nominees were selected based on sales and airplay, and fans chose the winners by voting online.
