The two confirmed the news on Friday in a statement, following days of mounting rumors of the wedding preparations.

“It’s great to be married, the ceremony was beautiful and it was so special to be surrounded by our family and friends,” the happy couple told PEOPLE Magazine.

This important step to family life has been a long time coming for Biel and Timberlake, who have been dating for almost five years. However, it hasn’t always been an easy road, considering the pair short split last year before their reunion just a few months later.

Winter 2011 saw reports that the Hollywood actor had proposed to his long-time girlfriend, 30, in Jackson, Wyo., though they never directly confirmed the news.

The Sexy Back singer told reporters at the time: “I did it the old fashion way – by telephone. That’s something I learned from both my stepdad and my grandfather – that there is a thing called chivalry and it doesn’t have to die with the birth of the internet.”

He continued: “The way I see it, if you’re asking a girl out on a date, it’s only right to do it in a way that she can hear your voice.”

He even admitted that he “had to be pretty persistent in order to get her to say yes.” “But I have a fair amount of tenacity and if I want something I stick to it. And in the end she agreed.”

The Time star also opened up that their most important quality as a couple is their willingness to work hard on their relationship.

“We have a couple of rules in our relationship,” Timberlake said. “The first rule is that I make her feel like she’s getting everything. The second rule is that I actually do let her have her way in everything. And, so far, it’s working.”

Biel, who has never gone public about her relationship with Timberlake, opened up about marriage in a May interview with the French magazine Gala.

“I don’t think our marriage will change anything,” she told the magazine. “It will be a challenge finding a balance between my private life, family and work, and I’m ready.”

As for Timberlake, he said of his then-bride Biel at a Trouble with the Curve press conference earlier in October: “She’s a really, really, really special person. Plus, she’s really, really, hot!”

He went on, adding: “I think it’s important to remember that you go into something like marriage knowing that you don’t know very much about it at all. But I do look at the marriage of my mother and stepdad, and what makes it work for them is that it’s a team effort.”

The two kept their wedding plans in a strict secret. Even their friends and family didn’t even know where they were going until they landed at a stop en route to their ultimate destination, Celebuzz reveals. That stop was in Germany, where guests were given further instructions.
