Avril Lavigne is engaged to Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger, People reports.
A spokeswoman for Lavigne confirmed a Tuesday report from the magazine that the 27-year-old pop-punk singer and 37-year-old rocker became engaged earlier this month after dating for six months.
Lavigne and Kroeger first met in February to co-write a song for Lavigne’s upcoming fifth studio album.
The couple became engaged on Aug. 8, when Kroeger presented the 27-year-old singer with a 14-carat diamond ring, tells The Huff Post.
“A romantic relationship blossomed as they spent time writing together,” a Lavigne’s friend told People.
“He makes her so happy,” a family source told the magazine. “Both of their families could not be more excited.”
Kroeger has never been married before, but this will be the second time Avril has walked down the aisle.
Lavigne’s marriage to Sum 41 frontman, Deryck Whibley, ended in 2009. Snce then she has been rumored to be dating Marilyn Manson, (but quickly quashed those stories) and also dated Kardashian step-brother Brody Jenner.
After being a very public couple for nearly two years, and getting some tattoos to pledge their love to one another, Lavigne and Jenner split in early 2012, not long before Lavigne and Kroeger started working together.
Lavigne and Kroeger have yet to comment publicly on their relationship.
Lavigne became famous with her 2002 album “Let’s Go.” Kroeger has served as lead vocalist and guitarist for Nickelback since the band formed in 1995.
MTV reports that Lavigne has said her fifth studio album will have a lighter, more fun pop tone and is expected to be released before the end of the year.
In addition to the song written and recorded with Kroeger, Lavigne also enlisted the recording talents of hip-hop production duo the Runners and former Evanescence bandmember David Hodges.
The engagement was trending on Twitter on Tuesday night. The reaction among Internet users to the pending nuptials was a mix of surprise, amusement and confusion — WTF, basically.
