Rihanna Cries about Chris Brown Incident: ‘He Needed Help’ [Video]

Rihanna burst into tears while telling Oprah Winfrey about her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown, who assaulted her a few years ago.

“I went there with my own ideas about who she was, watching the videos and listening to her music. I thought she was going to be kind of a badass, kind of hard-edged rocker pop woman,” Winfrey said Oprah admitted she had certain ideas about the pop star prior to the interview.

RiRi invited Oprah Winfrey to her hometown in Barbados and told her of the night her ex-boyfriend assaulted the singer after a pre-Grammy Awards party in 2009.

“It was a weird, confusing space to be in,” Rihanna said of the incident on “Oprah’s Next Chapter,” set to air on Sunday, August 19 at 9 p.m. ET.

“As angry as I was, as angry and hurt and betrayed, I just felt like he made that mistake because he needed help,” she continued.

“It became a circus and I felt protective. I felt like the only person they hate right now is him. Who’s gonna help him?” the ‘Umbrella’ singer wondered.

“So, I had to deal with that and that’s not easy for me to understand, interpret and it’s not easy to interpret on camera, not with the world watching.”

She added: “So it was hard for me to even pay attention to my mind and figuring things out because now it became a circus and I felt protective – like I felt like the only person they hate right now is him.

The court ruling sentenced the rapper to five years of probation and six months of community service and was ordered by the courts to receive domestic violence courses for a year, On The Red Carpet writes.

“It was embarrassing. It was humiliating. I lost my best friend. Like, everything I knew switched – switched overnight,” the singer said.

“And I couldn’t control that, so I had to deal with that, and that’s not easy for me to understand or interpret. And it’s not easy to interpret on camera. Not with the world watching.”

Meanwhile, Brown continued to make headlines other reasons. This summer the singer was reportedly involved into a bar brawl with fellow R&B singer Drake, and last year he allegedly smashed a window at the Good Morning America studios after an interview about Rihanna.

Still, Rihanna believes that the offender’s actions have been misinterpreted by the public. “No one’s going to say, ‘He needs help,'” she said. “Everybody’s going to say, ‘He’s a monster. Without looking at the source.'”

According to The Hollywood Life, an insider close to Brown revealed: “Chris saw the video clip. Of course he saw it, how do you think he feels? He feels horrible he did that.”

The source continues, “Watching [Rihanna’s interview with Oprah] made him realize he made a big mistake and he’s been paying for it ever since.”

“He’s working hard, in the studio, dancing, doing everything he can to rebuild his name and career and I think he been successful in doing all that. Y’all should be talking about his road to recovery and how he’s been a man and made s–t right.”

The insider went on talking: “He and Ri are cool, more cool than anyone will know. She forgave the [boy] the minute that s–t went down, so what that say about their relationship?”
