According to a TMZ report, the 29-year-old was found early Friday with blood coming out of his nose and ears. Short time later 911 was called and authorities arrived at the scene where the TV star was pronounced dead.
As it was known, Kovar struggled publicly with drug abuse, entering rehab while filming the Real World and seeking help on Celebrity Rehab for addiction to cocaine and ecstasy, writes PEOPLE Magazine.
Described on his Twitter page as an “EX Reality Star, Musician, Song writer, Model, Actor, Professional Wrestler, Nutrition and Supplement Enthusiast, Personal Trainer, Security Guard,” Konar opened up about his struggles and his decision to move back into the house.
“You know, I guess in a way, I did feel a little bit betrayed — by some [castmates] more than others,” he said at the time.
“It was my understanding that things would change around the house in order to help keep me on the road to recovery but, unfortunately, the very first night back from rehab, every roommate but Will and Sarah went out and got messed up. To me, that was a little messed up.”
He went on, adding: “But I am all about being positive nowadays, and I do not and will not hold a grudge on anyone for anything. At one time, I was a very negative person and held a lot of grudges — most of my life was one letdown after another.”
Konar continued: “Now I’m in a very different place. The more positive I am and the more I give back, the better quality my life is and has been.”
A bio on the show’s website also read: “Joey had been abusing massive amounts of alcohol, cocaine, ecstasy, meth and, as part of his bodybuilding, steroids since he was a teenager and had come very close to death through an overdose.”
The Konars reported that Joey had been sober for about six months while working on a new project. Family members also revealed that Kovar wasn’t at home overnight, but they had spoken with him on Thursday evening.
“Everyone is in shock right now. He seemed fine, he was happier and he was doing better,” David Kovar, the actor’s brother, said.
Soon after the news came, a spokesperson for MTV said, “MTV is deeply saddened to learn that Joey Kovar of The Real World: Hollywood has passed away. We offer our sympathies to Joey’s loved ones, friends and fans.”
The ‘Real World’ star devoted all his free time to his 3-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter. Five years ago Kovar was discovered on the street by a talent scout in Chicago and quickly made his name on the reality shows.
His brother assured that the actor never let the fame get to his head as his life revolved around his children, reports Chicago Tribune.
“He loved them more than anything, he was just a great father,” said his brother. “He never let any of that go to his head. He was still about being by family.”
