The style icon Vera Wang and husband Arthur Becker announced that they were separating on Wednesday, after 23 years of marriage.
The president of Wang’s company, Mario Grauso, said in a statement, “Vera Wang and Arthur Becker have mutually and amicably agreed to separate. They remain devoted parents to their two daughters.”
The 63-year-old designer and Becker have two daughters together—Cecilia, 22, and Josephine, 19.
Although the couple has indeed announced their separation, Wang’s rep tells E! News that there is “no divorce to report” and the longtime pair has only separated, thus far.
Becker, a former tech company CEO, is widely credited with guiding Wang’s mass-market ventures and has become more involved with day-to-day operations at Vera Wang in recent years, according to NY Daily News.
Wang’s company has expanded into makeup, fragrances, mass market, juniors, home goods and a lower-cost bridal line in recent years, writes People.
However, a friend of the designer said that the couple “will not let this impact the running of the company. They have worked too hard to build it up.”
Becker helped Wang turn her fashion line into a multimillion-dollar business.
Vera Wang, who started at Ralph Lauren in 1987 and opened her first private salon at New York’s Carlyle Hotel in 1990, famously designed Kim Kardashian’s three wedding gowns in 2011 (plus sister Khloé Kardashian Odom’s dress in 2009).
A former figure skater, Wang designed dresses for Victoria Beckham, Jennifer Lopez, Chelsea Clinton, Ivanka Trump, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Jennifer Garner, among others.
Vera Wang and Arthur Becker wed at The Pierre hotel in New York in 1989.
Later, Wang would describe her marriage as a surprise. “I was the girl who nobody thought would ever get married,” she told New York in 2006. “I was going to be a fashion nun the rest of my life. There are generations of them, those fashion nuns, living, eating, breathing clothes.”
Wang continued: “But Ralph said, ‘Get yourself a husband and a family.’ Anna said, ‘You have got to get a family going here. You’ve been single for three decades now.’ So I married my husband. There are days I’m not happy I did it, but there are days I’m thrilled—I mean, he has always understood my nature, which is that it’s always about product.”
A source tells E! News that “Vera and her husband were all but done last year. In fact, Vera attended Kim Kardashian’s wedding with Olympic figure skater Evan Lysacek as her date.”
Vera Wang’s Fall 2012 bridal collection was praised by critics for its beauty, elegance and unique color palette. Many of the designer’s dresses were blush, nude and black. But looking back on those romantic gowns, one has to wonder: was there a hidden message inside?
