Ashley Blazer Biden was married to Dr. Howard Krein in Wilmington, Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, said in a joint statement released by the vice president’s office.
“We’re happy to welcome Howard into our family, and we wish them all the best in their new life together,” the statement says.
The couple were wed at the steepled St. Joseph on the Brandywine Roman Catholic Church, in Greenville, in the same church where she Ashley was baptized, in a ceremony combining the bride’s Catholic traditions and the groom’s Jewish ones, reports People.
Ashley is a social worker for the Delaware Department of Services for Children, Youth and Their Families.
Her new husband is a New Jersey native and a facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, according to The Huff Post.
After the ceremony the newlyweds and some 200 family and close friends went to the Biden family’s lakeside family home in nearby Wilmington for a reception and dinner served family-style in the backyard, which was personally prepped for the big event by the Vice President.
The Vice President laid fresh sod and his wife, Jill, had planted special fast-growing vines up the latticework around the party tent in the recent weeks.
Jill Biden said in an interview before the ceremony that Krein’s plans to ask Joe Biden for his daughter’s hand in marriage were delayed when his train to Washington broke down. He finally got there at 1 a.m.
“He asked for Ashley’s hand and of course Joe said yes,” Jill Biden said in the interview. “Howard is the perfect guy,” Jill Biden said. “He’s perfect for Ashley.”
Jill Biden also said the couple are passionate about helping the less-privileged, according to MSN BC, and that Krein spends two weeks a year in Belize performing reconstructive surgery on children with facial deformities.
Joe Biden had been a U.S. Senator from Delaware before he and President Barack Obama were elected to the White House in 2008. He is originally from Pennsylvania, tells Reuters.
