The Mean Girls star had been rumored to be filling the role earlier this year, but only now network executives have officially confirmed the news.

The film is based on Taylor’s much publicized relationship with Richard Burton. Taylor and Burton met as co-stars of the 1963 epic Cleopatra. They fell in love as the world looked on, left their respective spouses and got married. Then they divorced, only to remarry and divorce again.

The two megastars were the original Brangelina, and their tempestuous relationship was the most infamous celebrity love affair of its day.

“We are thrilled Lindsay will portray beloved Hollywood legend Elizabeth Taylor,” says Lifetime boss Rob Sharenow. “She is one of the rare actresses who possesses the talent, beauty and intrigue to capture the spirit of such a provocative icon.”

Lifetime executive producer Larry Thompson also believes that Lindsay is “perfect” — yes, perfect — for the role.

“We wanted Lindsay from day one,” he said. “She had a lot in her life that was going on. We needed to give her time to take care of her business, and while we negotiated the deal for her we prayed for her — and wonderfully she has behaved. She’s cleared herself and we’re ready to start this movie.”

He kept on talking: “I think Lindsay — who is very gifted — deserved another chance. We never — of three pages of ‘what-ifs’ in the negotiation, there never was, ‘what if she can’t act?’ We know she can act.”

The trouble star who has recently completed her probation, also made a statement about the casting move; saying, “I have always admired and had enormous respect for Elizabeth Taylor. She was not only an incredible actress but an amazing woman as well. I am very honored to have been asked to play this role.”

According to News (AU), Lohan will star in the Lifetime Original Movie Liz & Dick, about the rocky romance between Taylor, who died in March 2011 aged 79, and her on-and-off screen partner, Richard Burton. The role of Burton, who died in 1984 at age 58, has not yet been cast.

It will be the first role for Lohan since 2010’s “Machete,” but the child-star-turned-ex-con has been on a comeback surge since her career was derailed by her legal troubles in recent years.

This isn’t the first time Lohan has portrayed a legend. She’s done a few Hollywood pinup-inspired photos, including her Marilyn Monroe-esque photo shoot for Playboy, which garnered record sales when she graced the cover.

The celebrity reportedly beat out another former gossip magazine cover girl, “Transformers” star Megan Fox, for the part. However, Fox shot those stories down in January via her Facebook page.

“Contrary to recent media reports I am not, and have never been in discussions to star in the lifetime biopic ‘Liz and Dick’,” she wrote.

The movie is scheduled to start filming in early June in Los Angeles.
