The singer shared with Ryan Seacrest about the collaboration with ex-boyfriend Chris Brown, which was the first track the pair recorded since the infamous domestic violence assault that occurred in 2009.
“The first song that came about was ‘Birthday Cake,'” Rihanna explained. “I mean we ended up recording them at the same time and executing them together, but I reached out to him about doing ‘Birthday Cake’ because that’s the only person that really, it made sense to do the record.”
She continued: “I reached out to him about doing Birthday Cake because that’s the only person that really… it made sense to do the record. Just as a musician – despite everything else – that was going to be the person.”
“I thought about rappers, and I’ve done that so many times, and the hottest R&B artist out right now is Chris Brown. So I wanted him on the track,” the singer added.
As a result, the former exes recorded the songs. “We did two records,” Rihanna said. “One for my fans. One for his fans, and that way our fans can come together. There shouldn’t be a divide. You know? It’s music, and it’s innocent.”
In an interview last month, Birthday Cake’s co-producer, The-Dream, said the decision to work with Brown was Rihanna’s to make. “The same questions that went through my mind … had to have gone through hers,” he told reporters.
“I know she’s not crazy. So my thought was, ‘You’ve been thinking about this, you’ve already thought it out, so evidently you know what reaction you gonna get’.”
Meanwhile, the speculations are growing, claiming that Rihanna may want Brown, 22, back in her personal, life too. Over the weekend, it appeared as though she was dropping hints on Twitter that the pair may be reconciling, writes The Daily Mail.
Quoting the Beres Hammond song ‘They Gonna Talk’, Rihanna tweeted: “When they see me with you, wonder what the crowd would say? When they find us together, what will all the people say?”
On Mar. 12, Ri took to Twitter again and reposted a message by @Notebook, saying, “Protect her, fight for her, kiss her, love her, hold her, laugh with her. BUT dont make her fall if you dont plan 2 catch her.”
To respond, Chris Brown’s ‘girlfriend’ Karrueche Tran took to Twitter to let the world know she’s not letting go of her man – take that, Rihanna. She is actually pointing out is that she’s the one who’s spending time with Chris now- not Rihanna.
Karrueche reportedly received death threats from Rihanna’s fans after that she tweeted: “Sitting in the house cuz I’m too scared to go out,” she tweeted. “Sometimes you just got to make the best out of a negative situation.”
“Chris Brown’s GF is scared to leave her house without bodyguards by her side – and she’s telling friends, it’s all because Rihanna’s crazy fans are threatening to kill her,” the insider told reporters.
