Good rum as a rule has a great story behind them. And Zacapa premium rum is not an exception.
It all began 35 years ago, in 1976 in eastern Guatemala, celebrating 100 years of life and gave birth to one of the world’s best tasting rums. It was a perfect combination of right things coming together for great-tasting rum.
There were some key factors played a part in this unique brew, like the local ingredients and geography of the area. In Guatemala there is a town called Zacapa and it was here, where this special-tasting rum came to be.
This premium dark rum would later share its name with the town and be called Zacapa. Delicious taste of Zacapa rum comes from the unique soils, land conditions, and deliciously prolonged sunlight in which sugar cane, from which the rum is made of.
West lands are perfectly suited for growing quality sugar cane. Here, in the rolling uplands of this green fertile landscape, acidic soils and prolonged periods of golden sunlight are the order of the day. The cane is grown in volcanic soil.
Besides, unlike most rums which use molasses (a by-product of the sugar making process), Zacapa premium rum uses only the concentrated first press of sugar cane, known as virgin sugar cane honey.
After that ageing process started, which takes place high up in the breathtaking Quetzaltenango highlands, 2,300 metres above sea level, where the cool mountain air slows the ageing process, creating a unique complexity of flavor.
The House Above the Clouds is actually one of the highest ageing facilities in the world and a unique Sistema Solera, the process employed here, originally devised by the Spaniards 500 years ago to age sherry.
It involves each drop of Zacapa premium dark rum passing through several casks that previously housed American whiskey, Oloroso sherry and Pedro Ximenez wines.
Every single feature of different ages and personalities are blended and stored in selected barrels to continue the maturation process. This process is repeated multiple times by the Master Blender over the years that the rum is aged.
Zacapa is a rum like no other. In fact, it has been praised all over the world, it has also got a Platinum Medal at the International Rum Festival and a First Place ranking by the Beverage Tasting Institute in Chicago, scoring an unprecedented 97 points.
“Amazing rum with fantastic aroma and such a wonderful taste. Hide yourself away with this and don’t share it! Too good to share,” says an Internet user.
