Katy Perry Divorce: Pop Star Breaks The Silence

A week after news broke that Katy Perry and Russell Brand are divorcing after a year of marriage, the pop singer has broken her silence.

The pop star broke her silence about her divorce from the British comedian on Saturday evening with two tweets, according to The Huff Post.

In one, Perry thanked fans for support while alluding to her divorce with references of the heart. In another, she slammed the media for running unsubstantiated gossip.

“I am so grateful for all the love and support I’ve had from people around the world,” she wrote. “You guys have made my heart happy again.”

In another tweet minutes later, she addressed the tabloid chatter that has been swirling around since Brand filed for divorce in Los Angeles on December 30, MTVreports.

“Concerning the gossip, I want to be clear that NO ONE speaks for me,” she said, “Not a blog, magazine, ‘close sources’ or my family.”

Brand released a statement at the time of the announcement, saying, “Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage. I will always adore her and I know we’ll remain friends.”

Meanwhile, the evangelical parents of singer Katy Perry have said her divorce from British comedian Russell Brand was a gift from God.

Keith and Mary Hudson, pastors at the Church on the Rise in Westlake, Ohio, told their congregation that the divorce was sent by God in order to encourage the 300 worshipers into church.

“I’m sure Katy is trending on the internet just to get you to church tonight,” said Mrs Hudson, 63.

“I mean all over the world, who knows how God is bringing them in? The most important thing is you are here and God wants to put the fire in you in 2012,” she said, as cited by The Telegraph.

Her husband, 63, made an emotional plea to worshippers to not judge his 27-year old daughter.

“I love my daughter and I will always love her. Stop being judgmental and critical. Do not close the doors to your loved ones, especially your children.

“Just because they do not like what you do or what you are, they are still praying that you stay in the race. They are counting on you. I believe in God, for every one of my children,” he said.

Perry was raised a devout Christian in Santa Barbara, California, and listened only to gospel music, but is now famed for her racy outfits.

It is reported that Perry asked Brand to file their court papers, citing irreconcilable differences, to avoid upsetting her parents who are opposed to divorce.

Katy Perry is set to make her first public appearance after her divorce announcement at the People’s Choice Awards on Wednesday [January 11] where she’s up for a number of awards.

She’s also slated to make two appearances on her California Dreams Tour later this month, one on January 19 in Jakarta, Indonesia, and another on January 22 in the Philippines.

Perry’s next awards show appearance could take place February 12 at the Grammys, where she’s up for two awards: Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for “Firework.”
