Seems like Bryant’s 10-year marriage wears towards its end. It was rumored it was Vanessa’s decision after she found out that her sport star husband has cheated on her again. Kobe reportedly was trying to win back her heart but Vanessa would not take the chance again.
Vanessa Bryant signed the papers on Dec. 1, citing “irreconcilable differences” in her divorce petition. Kobe Bryant, in his turn, signed his response on Dec. 7 and it was filed Friday, according to the documents.
“The Bryants have resolved all issues incident to their divorce privately with the assistance of counsel and a judgment dissolving their marital status will be entered in 2012,”said in a statement couple’s representative.
Moreover, Vanessa Bryant requested spousal support and legal and custody of the couple’s two daughters, Natalia Diamante Bryant, 8, and Gianna Maria-Onore, 5. Kobe asked for the same in his response.
The Bryants “ask that in the interest of our young children and in light of the upcoming holiday season the public respect our privacy during this difficult time,” was said in the statement.
Bryant, 33, and his future ex-wife, 29, married in April 2001, when Bryant was just 22 and she was 18.
In 2003 there was a public scandal after Bryant was charged with allegedly raping a 19-year-old woman who worked at the exclusive Lodge & Spa at Cordillera near Vail, Colo. But the charges were eventually dropped after the accuser refused to testify.
After that Vanessa showed up at a news conference with her husband holding his hand and stroked it tenderly as the NBA star admitted he was guilty of adultery – but nothing else. Moreover she had issued her own statement to the media, urging to stand by her husband.
“I know that my husband has made a mistake – the mistake of adultery,” Vanessa said in the statement at the time. “He and I will have to deal with that within our marriage, and we will do so. He is not a criminal.”
Some days after Bryant was charged, his wife was noticed wearing an 8-carat purple diamond ring worth about $4 million, which many described as a apologetic gesture to her.
“I sit here in front of you guys, furious at myself, disgusted at myself for making the mistake of adultery,” Bryant said in a press conference. “And I love my wife with all my heart.”
But the way, it was leaked that the couple didn’t have a pre-nup, and Vanessa can pretend to half of Kobe’s fortune. According to TMZ, Kobe’s worth an estimated $150 million—far less than the $400 million that was originally supposed.
Besides the half of the husband’s fortune Vanessa can also get the couple’s gigantic Newport Coast, California, mansion. Kobe bought the sprawling Orange County property about 10 years ago, but it’s unclear whether he lives there or not.
However, the couple was seen yesterday at a Christmas musical their two children took part in, just a few hours before news of their divorce broke. Kobe and Vanessa sat next to each other during the show and left together in the same car. But while Vanessa appeared to be in a very good mood, talking to friends and having a good time, Kobe looked “somber” and spoke to no one. [Via People, AceShowBiz and Access Hollywood]
