In theory the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is all about trying to get people to buy the company’s lingerie. The reality, though, is much different. In most runway shows, audiences can expect one or two show-stopping, jaw-dropping pieces, but for annual Victoria’s Secret’s Fashion Show, just about every model is bound to create a stir.
With six dazzling lingerie themes, live performances by big-name performers – not to mention some of the world’s biggest supermodels hamming it up for the crowd – the intimates brand goes for broke each year to create a buzz; the parade costs about $12 million.
The most-talked about piece of the show, which filmed in New York’s Lexington Armoury on Nov. 9, was the bejeweled Fantasy Treasure Bra worth $2.5 million and dripping in 3,400 precious gems. Miranda Kerr, wife of Orlando Bloom (known for his role in Disney’s “Pirates” franchise), modeled the priceless brassiere in her triumphant return to the intimates show after giving birth to a son in January.
The brand’s Pink line (which generally appeals to a teen to 20-something demographic), took on a “pretty punk” motif, during which Nicki Minaj sang “Super Bass” in a yellow corset and graphic skirt that can best be described as “cosmic phunk” – it would look wild on any performer other than Minaj and Lady Gaga.
The line included its usual cheerful underwear sets, graphic floral prints and brightly striped socks in citrus neon hues, which may become a common sight in dorm rooms this spring. Adding a street-but-cute feeling to the section were glowing neon tubes fashioned into wings and ovals that bounced behind models.
Lots of lace over deeply hued sets, sheer corsets, parasols and half-skirts gave several looks the feeling of European “coquetry” (in the flirtiest translation of the word). In a red bra and underwear set, Douzten Kroes’ famous abs were overshadowed by a sheer purple cape that soared behind her and looked like a giant bustle.
Of course, feathers played a significant role in the soiree, with a reported 39 wing sets in the show. Supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio wore the brand’s weightiest pair ever, clocking in at 30-lbs – the stunner needed to strengthen her back for this/the walk.
During a balletic portion of the show, several models donned feathered tutu skirts over towering heels with satin ribbons that crisscrossed up to calves – showing that “Black Swan” is still influencing style.
Kanye West, who was rumoured in the last few weeks to have made a love connection with “baby Angel” Chanel Iman, sang his no-fail hit “Stronger” and was joined afterward by Jay-Z for a rendition of “N—as in Paris”. Adam Levine also serenaded the crowd – and his girlfriend, model Anne Vyalitsyna – with Maroon 5’s “Moves like Jagger”.
Many over-the-top outfits on the runway will not make an appearance in stores, but much of the lingerie (which was hidden under outlandish pieces like a peek-a-boo Edwardian-style lace collar and disco ball skirt), will be available to shoppers in the coming months. The escapade, which airs just after American Thanksgiving on CBS on Nov. 29, has become an earmark of the start of holiday shopping season.
