The 4th of July was the day – the Office of the Vice President Joe Biden launched an official Twitter account – @VP. Vice President’s staff tweeted: “VP & Dr. B [Dr. Jill Biden] hope you take time to think about our troops & military families this Independence Day, Happy 4th from OVP! @JoiningForces.”
Joe Biden’s office said the account would keep followers posted on all things happening in the Office of the Vice President, from the West Wing, to the Eisenhower Executive Office Building and the Office of Dr. Jill Biden, to the Naval Observatory. Biden’s travels and behind-the-scenes looks at his life also will be revealed.
The account has already got more than 4,000 followers in the accounts opening hours. Like many other politicians, Biden’s staff will handle most of the tweeting. And it is expected that Biden’s wife, Dr. Jill Biden, will contribute too, updating folks on her work with military families and other projects.
The White House Blog wrote that Vice President Biden’s office joined Twitter in preparation for the first ever Twitter Town Hall with President Obama, scheduled for this Wedensday at 2 p.m. EDT. The tweeters behind the account promise to keep followers updated on the activities and news surrounding the Vice President’s executive actions and travels, as well as “a behind the scenes look at Veep-life.”
It’s part of the White House’s growing focus on social media. The White House regularly communicates via Twitter, as does President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign. Obama said that he would personally write some of the campaign tweets.
On Wednesday the White House will hold a Twitter town hall. Obama will take questions via Twitter, though he’ll respond verbally. The official White House Twitter account has 2.25 million followers.
Vice President Biden, a 68-year-old career politician, has had some public speaking gaffs regarding technology. You may remember that, in 2009, when pitching President Obama’s $787 billion stimulus package to the American public, Biden appeared on CBS’ “The Early Show” and mistakenly referred a website address as a “website number”.
Social networking played a big role in the Obama victory in 2008, and it looks like the whole White House is ramping up their social networking before the 2012 election. Remember that a few weeks ago, we told you about how the Obama 2012 campaign staff had taken control of the @BarackObama Twitter account, and that even the President himself would be Tweeting from the account (or so they say).
