Carrie Underwood was the big winner at tonight’s CMT Music Awards, taking home three major honors, including video of the year. The group Lady Antebellum and the veteran duo Brooks & Dunn also took home prizes.
Tonight was definitely a night for country music to shine. Some might have watched the Chicago Blackhawks win the 2010 Stanley Cup.
Others might have even watched the top eleven announced for “So You Think You Can Dance 2010”, but country music fans were tuned in and watching a slate of performances that included the Zac Brown Band and Lady Antebellum.
The show was hosted by Kid Rock, a rapping rocker with a country streak. The ceremony included appearances by Taylor Swift, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Reba McEntire and a host of other country stars.
“Watching you host all night, well I gotta say-you’re a natural,” Sheryl Crow told Kid Rock onstage.
“I’m actually having fun,” he replied. “I felt good at the beginning-now I feel real good, you know what I mean?” Kid Rock then slow-danced with Crow and asked her to have his baby.
After a live performance from Zac Brown Band who delivered a thoughtful song “Free”, “Dancing with the Stars” stars Erin Andrews and Maksim Chmerkovskiy came to the stage of Bridgestone Arena. The two was there to announce the winner of Male Video of the Year.
Keith Urban was revealed as the champ. He won over Jason Aldean, Billy Currington, Toby Keith and Tim McGraw. In addition to thanking those who have supported him, this country music singer also sent his prayers to the people in the Gulf of Mexico “who are going through such an insane time right” due to BP oil spill.
Soon after Keith wrapped his speech, Kara DioGuardi introduced a performance from Carrie Underwood, the “American Idol” alum who now has become an “American Icon”. The singer who won the fourth season of the singing competition sang her single “Undo It” during the Wednesday event.
The next country music singer who took the stage was LeAnn Rimes. Collaborating with Luke Wilson, she announced Miranda Lambert as the recipient of Female Video of the Year for “White Liar.”
She beat out Underwood (”Cowboy Casanova”), Taylor Swift (”You Belong With Me”), and Reba McEntire (”Consider Me Gone”).
“My first buckle, this rocks!” she said on stage. “Thanks to the fan, this is awesome. — One more thing: Let’s just hope my next wedding doesn’t end up like that one.”
Closing the celebration was the announcement of “Video of the Year” winner. The big winner of the night – as we’ve already said – was Carrie Underwood. She won two awards during the event, “Video of the Year” for Cowboy Casanova and “Performance of the Year” for “Temporary Home”.
She beat down Taylor Swift, Miranda, Lady Antebellum and Toby Keith. “Awesome fans, awesome, awesome, amazing, awesome, awesome,” she said during the acceptance speech regarding the second trophy she received at the 2010 CMT Awards.
