Nobody ever accused Porsche of not building very fast cars, but the addition of the Porsche Cayenne and Porsche Panamera in recent years has caused some concern for Porsche purists.
However, the all-new 2011 Porsche 911 GT2 RS should help fix all that as Porsche claims it’s the fastest and most powerful production Porsche car ever. Yes, apparently even faster than the Carrera GT and more powerful than any Porsche 911 Turbo.
Intended to sit at the summit of the 911 range, the RS gets an extra 90 bhp over the standard GT2 and weighs 70kg less. The stripped-out Porsche gets to 62mph in 3.4 seconds, will hit 124 mph in under 10 seconds and won’t stop accelerating until 205mph.
In case those figures failed to lend the GT2 RS enough high-performance credibility, Porsche has put the car round the formidable Nurburgring Nordschleife clocking a deeply impressive time of 7 minutes 18 seconds – some eight seconds quicker than a famous Nissan GTR.
To handle the extra performance, the company had tires deigned specifically for the car that can withstand the high speed as well as the car’s cornering abilities.
To improve the 911 GT2’s already impressive handling, Porsche gave the GT2 RS specially tuned springs, anti-roll bars and engine mounts and retuned the Porsche Adaptive Suspension Management (PASM) and Porsche Stability Management (PSM) systems.
PASM has two modes (Normal and Sport) available for the driver to choose from which electronically adjust the shocks depending on the driving condition. The PSM system works with the ABS system to keep the car in check during normal driving conditions, but in racing conditions, the GT2 RS can have the stability and traction control systems turned off individually for better track handling.
For optimal stopping, Porsche also gave the GT2 RS the Porsche Composite Ceramic Brakes (normally an $8,840 option) as standard equipment.
To ensure the RS stands out from the 911 crowd Porsche has adorned it with an abundance of carbon fiber including the front hood, side air intakes, the front spoiler lip and the rear wing. These elements are covered with a matte-black finish to give the car its racecar-like appearance.
The design of the front spoiler lip and rear wing have been changed to improve aerodynamics and downforce, while the lightweight alloy wheels reduce weight and give the car a better styling. Like Porsche’s RS Spyder wheel, the exclusive wheels feature a center-locking design.
To finish off the unique exterior appearance, GT2 RS badges are mounted on the doors and the rear lid. The 911 GT2 RS will be available in four colors: silver, red, white and black with three different wheel colors available as well.
Inside, the 911 GT2 RS is also distinguishable thanks to its contrasting red and black interior colors. The lightweight carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) front seats are standard and help shave precious weight, while the interior door handles are replaced by fabric straps similar to the upcoming Porsche Boxter Spyder.
For a luxurious look and feel, the GT2 RS features Alcantara throughout the cabin including on the gear shifter, arm rests, headliner, seats and center console lid.
Porsche plans to build 500 examples of the car with the United States version starting at $245,000. For those lucky enough, the 2011 Porsche 911 GT2 RS goes on sale in Europe in September and then in the U.S. a month later, but Porsche hasn’t detailed any specific breakdown of how many of the 500 total units will be available in each market.
