Shakira needed years of intensive therapy to feel happy with her body. The 33-year-old Colombian singer is famed for her toned physique, which is frequently on show in her sexy music videos.

But while her figure is celebrated as one of the best in the business, Shakira has revealed she hated herself so much, she has been seeing a psychologist almost every day since 2001.

“Therapy has helped me so much in every aspect of my life from body image to relationships. It’s about understanding myself – sometimes I’ll speak to my therapist for an hour a day, it has become my routine. I’ve become so much more comfortable with who I am and the body God has given me.”

The star said she has been working out with celebrity fitness guru Tracy Anderson, who has worked with Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Shakira said: “All through my 20s I spent more time worrying what I didn’t have than thinking about what I did have,” the singer said. I wished I was taller, had longer legs, slimmer hips, a smaller bottom, even straighter hair. I’m just like all women – we’re born to criticise ourselves.”

“Seeing a therapist has helped me so much with every aspect of my life, from body image to relationships. I’ve become so much more comfortable with who I am and the body God has given me, ” she added.

Shakira now feels completely comfortable in her own skin. She still sees her therapist often, sometimes talking to her for up to an hour a day. She doesn’t think she will ever stop having the sessions, because they continue to help her so much.

“My therapist taught me why I behave in certain ways and not to feel so pressured,” she told British newspaper The News of the World. It’s incredibly liberating to spend an hour talking to someone and not caring about what you sound like.

“It’s about understanding myself. Sometimes I’ll speak to my therapist for an hour a day. It’s become part of my routine. In their 20s, women try to be somebody they’re not and try to turn themselves into something different. Now I’m in my 30s, I’m very happy with who I am.”

Worth an estimated £26 million, Shakira, full name Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, has sold more than 50 million records worldwide. [via Telegraph (UK) and Stuff (NZ)]
